Centre for Geopolitics

Providing historically-grounded solutions to enduring geopolitical problems

The Centre of Geopolitics & Grand Strategy is pleased to announce that we have recently begun the process of integrating the Cambridge Initiative on Religion & International Studies (CIRIS) into the Centre.  CIRIS had been based at Clare College, Cambridge for five years.

'The interplay between religion and geopolitics has been an important part of the Centre's work, especially in connection with the Westphalia for the Middle East project. I am delighted that with CIRIS becoming a research strand of the Centre we will now be able to deepen that engagement,’ said Prof Brendan Simms, Director of the Centre.

As one of the constituent research strands of the Centre, CIRIS will continue to provide students, policymakers, and the general public with credible and engaging insights that will shape new scholarship, sound policy, and constructive debate on the role of faith in global affairs. Currently, CIRIS serves as the Secretariat of the Transatlantic Policy Network on Religion and Diplomacy, manages the website Religion & Diplomacy, runs a project on Protestant Political Thought, and regularly hosts reading groups, seminars, workshops, and public lectures on a wide range of topics at the University of Cambridge.

Judd Birdsall, the founding director of CIRIS, said 'I am profoundly grateful to Clare College for supporting our institutional development over the past five years. The move presents an exciting new chapter for our research, engagement, and impact. I am thrilled and thankful to have this opportunity to integrate into the Centre of Geopolitics and to collaborate with the Centre's other research strands.''

Selected events organised by CIRIS that focus on religion in geopolitics will be shared through this list. If you would like to receive information regarding all of the upcoming events organised by CIRIS, you can subscribe using this link:
