Applied History and Contemporary Geopolitics – Call for Papers

We invite proposals for a new seminar series on ‘Applied History and Contemporary Geopolitics.’

This Institute for Historical Research Partnership Seminar Series is convened by the Engelsberg Applied History Programme; the Centre for Grand Strategy at King’s College London; the Centre for Geopolitics at the University of Cambridge; and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office Historians. The seminar welcomes proposals from doctoral students, earlycareer researchers, and faculty from institutions across the world.

This online seminar series represents a unique opportunity for historians interested in applying historical insight to contemporary questions in international affairs. There is no specific regional, thematic, or periodic focus for these seminars, but we would encourage all prospective speakers to frame their presentations in a way that addresses a modern subject in international politics through a historical lens. Prospective speakers are welcome to share work which makes up their doctoral theses, drafts of journal articles, or drafts of book chapters.

Each seminar will include 1-2 speakers presenting on related topics. Presentations should run between 20 and 25 minutes, and will be followed by a Q&A period. Speakers will be asked to submit a short paper between 2-3 pages one week prior to the seminar. These documents will be circulated to seminar attendees in advance of the meeting.

Tentative dates for the seminar series:

  • 18 March 2021, 5.00 – 6.15pm
  • 28 April 2021, 5.00 – 6.15pm
  • 12 May 2021, 5.00 – 6.15pm
  • 2 June 2021, 5.00 – 6.15pm
  • 23 June 2021, 5.00 – 6.15pm

Those interested in presenting at this seminar are invited to submit proposal by 5 February 2021. Proposals should include a provisional title, an abstract (of 400 words max), and a CV.

Please send to andrew.ehrhardt@kcl.ac.uk with the subject label: ‘Applied History Seminar Proposal.’ Each proposal will be reviewed by members from the three institutions, and selected speakers will be notified by 19 February.
