Centre for Geopolitics

Providing historically-grounded approaches to enduring geopolitical problems.

In conversation with Professor Brendan Simms and Professor Diane Coyle, Harold James will explore how contemporary political language has been formed by its nineteenth century origins and what can be done to better define major political ideas.

In his new book ‘The War of Words: A Glossary of Globalization’, James elaborates how we can recover the nuance and meaning of ideological terms like liberalism, conservatism, nationalism, capitalism, and socialism to help improve our political debates.

James is the Claude and Lore Kelly Professor in European Studies and a professor of history and international affairs at Princeton University. Previously, he was a Fellow of Peterhouse. His works include ‘Family Capitalism’ and ‘The Creation and Destruction of Value’.
